Respighi, Ottorino

There's much more to Ottorino Respighi than Pines of Rome and Fountains of Rome. This week we'll hear his connections with the music of Brazil, touch on his experiences in war-torn Europe, and see how this intriguing violinist, composer and musicologist artfully moved Italian music into the 20th century.

Resphigi begins showcasing his compositions at age 17, and he provides Italian composers with the reputation of their mastery in orchestral music. Bill samples the trills within Resphigi's work, and the mystery throughout on the keys, as Bill compares his music to such composers as Mahler and Mendelssohn. Resphigi's career launches.

Respighi is inspired by 19th century poetry, including that of Percy Bysshe Shelley's work. "Aretusa" is a piece about the escape of Aretusa, the water nymph, who is captured by the river god, Alpheus. Respighi explores his own path of music, one that does not abide by the traditions of the 20th century, and introduces one of his most famous pieces to prequel the Pines of Rome. Program 3

Surround yourself with the smell of pine trees with the sequel to Fountains of Rome, of Respighi. Here is Pines of Rome, a piece that narrates the image of children playing just before dusk takes over. Respighi gains an interest in Gregorian chant, and his Concerto Gregoriano is inspired by just that genre. And in Pines of Rome, hear the nightingales chant upon the arrival of the darkness within the pines.

Program 4

Following Pines of Rome and Fountains of Rome, Respighi continues to employ a mystery throughout his music, here beginning with the ominous symbol of the snake of Butantan. Bill samples the solemn, beautiful sound of two English horns paired with the solo violin in Poema Autunnale for Violin and Orchestra of Respighi. Then, immerse yourself in a series of stained-glass windows with Church Windows. Inspiration from bible scriptures are evident here, as is the sound of a victory against a vicious dragon.

A number of birds are characterized here by Respighi in Gli Uccelli. Bill samples the "cuckoo" sound heard within this series of flocking. But first, an encounter with an American woman, Elizabeth Coolidge, lands Respighi a commission to write Trittico Botticelliano. Finally, Respighi writes yet another piece about Rome, following his Pines of Rome and Fountains of Rome, which narrates the chanting, tumult and then joyful resolution throughout Respighi's favorite city.
